Hi all. I am limited to ten pictures at a time, so I am currently working on a solution to that problem. Possibly a switch to another blog, or just a lot of work to catch up. I recommend checking out my pictures on facebook if you can, there are a lot more of them. I am just trying to get the best pictures up for now.
Obviously I am a few days behind, so let me explain what I have been up to.
Well, after Maria Taferl, we traveled to the monastery in Melk. It was a very ornate place, done almost entirely in the baroque style. It was admittedly impressive, even though I have never really been a huge fan of the style. I prefer Gothic architecture.
We learned a lot about the history of the monastery, but to sum it up it is a huge facility that has been active for a long time.
The next day, we took a tour of the parts of the Kartause (my temporary home) that are ordinarily off limits to students. It was pretty interesting. We learned that our church originally had a Gothic style high ceiling, but it was covered over with another ceiling and a dome about 15 feet below it. We actually got to go up and walk across the replacement ceiling to see the original one. While we were up there we also got to go in the dome, which was filled with the signatures of Russian soldiers that had been stationed there as lookouts during the Russian occupation of that region after World War Two.
Finally, today we went on a brief tour of Gaming, the city I currently live in. It is a nice quaint little town that I can’t wait to further explore on my own when the weather is nicer.
Tomorrow is the first day of classes, and the bishop is coming to celebrate Mass with us. Needless to say, it is going to be a busy day. I am planning on setting up a couple of slideshows to show you around the Kartause and Gaming as soon as possible. Hopefully I can get it all done tomorrow, but no promises on that just yet.
Peace,
Storm
